The Odyssey is about Odysseus, a hero of the Trojan war on his return journey back to his country of Ithaca. Odysseus starts by leaving for Ithaca, and all goes well untill he doesn't give enough respect to Zeus for helping him win the war. Odysseus eventually ends up on the Island of the Polyphemus, a cyclops who is also Poseidon's son. He tricks Polyphemus and blinds him, while taunting him on his escape. Polyphemus asks Poseidon for vengeance, and Poseidon grants his wish. Odysseus is cursed from then on, and the journey does not go smoothly. He is attacked by Sea Monsters, Cannibals, and his men are turned into swine. Many of his friends die along the way, and he is seduced into staying with various women for many years, but his determination ends up overcoming his want to relax. He eventually returns home disguised as a beggar, and he learns that his wife, Penelope, was about to stay true to his promise to marry another man if he didn't come home. He finally reveals himself to his son, and together they cleanse Ithaca of the suitors and traitorous maids. Finally, after 20 years, he gets home to his true love, Penelope. Odysseus is a very likeable character. He is very wise and strong, and able to think on his feet. You will begin to like him for the decisions he makes, which are not always the best for everyone, but the best for the majority. Some other main characters are the gods. The ones that are mentioned most are Athena, who is Odysseus's guardian, Zeus, who is angry at Odysseus, and Poseidon, who fulfills a promise to his son to make Odysseus's trip home a vicious struggle with the sea. Telemachus is Odysseus's son, who is very much like his father. He is overjoyed when he learns that his father is still alive, and together, they reunite their family and their land.
